国民保健卡不仅是用以证明你的身份，同样让你享受澳大利亚最全面的医疗保险服务，而且这是全民参与的，这也是下政府为保障国民的健康而规定的。国民保健卡须在当地的联邦服务部办理，一定要记得这个机构，它相当于社保局，无论是社会福利还是困难补助救济等问题都是归这个机构负责，你出现这方面问题同样可以去咨询。
为什么一定要办这个国民保健卡呢？只要你持有该卡你去公立医院看病免一切门诊费，就等于免了几十到一百澳元的费用。不过检查和药和医疗费用则按医保比例支付的，当然，个人支付的比例是相当小的。如果你不在公立医院，在私立医院接受治疗同样可以减少些费用，只需要支付医疗之外的全部减价即可。
